The 2015 Festival was widely acclaimed as being the most successful so far. We will continue to offer the unique combination of literary festival and living history entertainment. This will include lectures and debates, a Blitz party, combat displays and interactive experiences such as the Trench, Sword School and Archery as well as air displays with historic aircraft at the weekend.

Our speakers are of an immensely high calibre including A.C. Grayling, Max Hastings, Jonathan Dimbleby, Margaret MacMillan, Melvyn Bragg, Andrea Wulf, Peter Mandelson, military veterans and many others covering a wide range of topics which are complemented by the living history exhibitions, ancillary tents and stalls. In the evenings there is a long break for an excellent supper in the Dining Tent when the speakers, sponsors and their guests as well as much of the audience congregate.

“The green room was perfect, the food was great, the talks I saw were all very good, the planes were spiffing and the kids were rewarding. Congratulations” Sebastian Faulks

The Festival is owned by the Chalke Valley History Trust which we set up to promote the importance, understanding and enjoyment of history to the widest possible audience of all ages.  The main Trust activity thus far is furthering the history education of children by running a concurrent Festival for Schools for which we have a bursary scheme to enable pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend. In addition to supporting the Festivals, the charitable Trust also gives small grants to other projects with similar objectives.

“What a wonderful Year 10 day – my girls absolutely loved the talks and were buzzing with new ideas and they really enjoyed the festival atmosphere.” (RM Abbey School)
