Festival for Schools
The Chalke Valley History Festival for Schools is a very important part of our festival week. We are proud that a large cross-section of schools attend, and a number travel a good distance to do so.
Our aim is to inspire, excite and inform pupils about our past.
We have a number of eminent speakers attending this year, covering both core curriculum subjects and more wide-ranging periods and topics. Among these are academics such as Dr Peter Caddick-Adams on the Somme, Professor Kendrick Oliver on the Vietnam War, the brilliant Chris Lloyd with his vivid history of Britain, eminent archaeologist Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe, Professor Nicholas Stargardt on Germany’s Second World War, and the hugely acclaimed Professor Sir Hew Strachan. In addition, there will be a host of other leading historians and writers, talking about Henry VIII’s wives, African-American civil rights, Churchill, women broadcasters and witchcraft. There will also be practical advice on how research and unlock the past. Whether it be for Year 10s, Year 12s or even Year 6s, we will be bringing together some of the finest historians and best communicators in the country.
